Curriculum Topics

Day 1: Breed Selection and Farm Setup
  • Basic features of cattle breeds according to their purpose (milk, meat, and combined),
  • Introduction to common cattle breeds in Turkey,
  • Choosing the ideal barn location and differences between barn types (free/stall),
  • Critical elements in barn planning: ventilation and flooring management,
Day 2: Nutrition Management and Ration Preparation
  • The importance of roughage and concentrate feeds on animal health and productivity,
  • Basic nutrition principles according to age and physiological stages (growth, lactation, dry periods),
  • Practical ration preparation techniques and sample rations,
  • Water management and the effect of clean water on productivity,
Day 3: Reproduction and Herd Management
  • Important signs in estrus monitoring and determining the right time for artificial insemination.
  • Correct insemination techniques and the importance of pregnancy monitoring.
  • Critical care protocols before and after calving.
  • Strategies to increase calf survival rates.
Day 4: Disease Management and Biosecurity
  • Preventive Medicine: Creating basic vaccination schedules,
  • Effective strategies for internal and external parasite control,
  • Early diagnosis and prevention of mastitis, foot diseases, and digestive system issues.
  • Farm Biosecurity: Hygiene, disinfection, and quarantine protocols,
Day 5: Record Keeping, Welfare, and Profitability
  • Using simple record-keeping and digital systems for herd management,
  • Animal Welfare: The 5 freedoms principle for profitable livestock farming and stress reduction methods,
  • Economic Analysis: Preparing a cost-revenue statement and ways to reduce costs,
  • Making managerial decisions for a sustainable and profitable cattle operation,

Training Outcomes

  • Can select the correct cattle breed and design an ideal barn setup.
  • Can prepare basic rations suitable for the animal’s physiological stage.
  • Can monitor the reproduction cycle and increase productivity in the herd.
  • Can recognize common diseases, create vaccination schedules, and apply preventive medicine.
  • Can analyze the profitability of their business at a basic level and ensure animal welfare.
  • Upon 79% or more attendance, participants will receive a certificate approved by the university.
