European Union Green Deal: Sustainability in Agriculture and Food Sector

The European Union (EU) has adopted a comprehensive strategy called the Green Deal to combat climate change, protect natural resources, and promote environmental sustainability. One of the main objectives of this strategy is to enhance the sustainability of the agriculture and food sector. The Green Deal aims to reduce environmental impacts in agriculture and food production, protect biodiversity, manage soil and water resources, and ensure that the sector is economically and socially sustainable.

Transformation of Agriculture: Promoting Climate-Friendly Practices

The Green Deal acknowledges the important role agriculture can play in combating climate change. Therefore, it encourages transformation in agricultural practices to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and increase carbon storage capacity. The EU promotes organic farming and agro-ecological practices in the agricultural sector, aiming to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Additionally, it supports practices such as afforestation of agricultural lands and renewable energy production on farms to reduce carbon emissions.

Protecting Biodiversity and Soil Management

The Green Deal emphasizes that agriculture should protect biodiversity and prevent soil erosion. The EU develops policies to adopt more sustainable approaches in farm management, promote agro-ecological practices, conserve natural habitats, and increase biological diversity. Furthermore, incentives are offered to restructure agricultural practices to improve soil fertility and prevent erosion.

Transformation of Food Systems: Towards a Fairer and More Sustainable Future

The Green Deal addresses all processes from food production to consumption to enhance the sustainability of food systems. The EU develops policies to reduce food waste, promote healthy and balanced diets, ensure food safety, and create fairer conditions in food production. In addition, it supports localization of food systems by promoting local and organic food production.

The EU Green Deal provides a comprehensive approach to enhancing sustainability in the agriculture and food sector. This strategy includes policies for establishing environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable agricultural and food systems, and strengthens the EU’s global leadership role. However, achieving these goals will likely face various challenges, and collaboration among all stakeholders in the sector is necessary.

Sustainability Training in Agriculture and Food Sector in Alignment with the EU Green Deal

Objective of the Training: With the implementation of regulations outlined in the EU Green Deal, the training will focus on new strategies in the agriculture and food sector and climate change adaptation. Additionally, preparation and adaptation processes and actions required by the sector to mitigate potential risks will be discussed.

This intensive program will help participants develop core business strategies and processes, enabling the establishment of a successful agriculture and food enterprise or the expansion of an existing one.

Target Audience: Stakeholders in the agriculture and food sector, undergraduate and graduate students, and all parties interested in acquiring knowledge about sustainable agricultural production.

By the end of the training, participants will gain management skills focused on innovative and globally competitive agriculture, learn sustainable farming techniques, acquire knowledge on the environmental impact of global agricultural production systems and efficient water use in agriculture, understand the environmental effects of agricultural inputs and outputs, learn how to adapt contemporary agricultural ecosystems for more sustainable farming, understand agricultural practices affecting access to sufficient, quality, and safe food, and gain insights into ecological landscape planning approaches.
