Published and enacted on April 7, 2016, the "Law on the Protection of Personal Data No. 6698" aims to protect individuals’ fundamental rights and freedoms, primarily the privacy of private life, in the processing of personal data, and regulates the obligations and rules to be fulfilled by real and legal persons processing personal data.
According to this law, individuals and institutions that process personal data are subject not only to administrative fines but also to imprisonment under the Turkish Penal Code. Specifically, violators of personal data are subject to 1 to 3 years of imprisonment.
Furthermore, a person who obtains data unlawfully may face 2 to 4 years of imprisonment. Administrative fines may range from 5,000 TL to 1,000,000 TL, depending on the unfulfilled article(s).
