Curriculum Topics

Day 1: Bee Colony and Equipment
  • Bee biology: The roles and life cycles of queen bees, worker bees, and drones in the colony.
  • Basic types of hives and their components.
  • Essential beekeeping equipment (smoker, mask, gloves) and their proper use.
  • Acquiring a new bee colony and hive setup.
Day 2: Colony Management and Year-Round Care
  • The seasonal cycle of bees: Developing the colony in spring and preparing for winter.
  • Bee feeding: When and why to provide syrup and pollen patties.
  • Reading the hive: Checking frames and assessing colony strength.
  • Swarming and swarm management.
Day 3: Managing Diseases and Pests
  • The primary threat: Varroa mites and control methods (organic and chemical).
  • Common bee diseases such as American and European Foulbrood and Nosema.
  • Pest management: Wax moths, bee-eater birds, and other harmful pests.
  • Hive hygiene and cleaning protocols.
Day 4: Honey Harvesting and Other Products
  • Honey ripening, harvest time, and proper extraction methods.
  • Harvesting and preserving pollen, propolis, and royal jelly.
  • Preserving honey quality and fighting honey fraud.
  • Packing and storing honey and other products.
Day 5: Queen Bee Rearing and Propagation
  • The impact of high-quality queen bees on colony productivity and health.
  • Methods of increasing colony numbers through artificial swarming (splitting).
  • Nomadic beekeeping: Choosing the right locations and transport rules to increase honey production.
  • Profitability in beekeeping and marketing bee products.

Training Outcomes

  • Understand the basic bee anatomy and colony structure.
  • Manage the hive effectively and profitably.
  • Apply proper feeding techniques in beekeeping.
  • Know the control methods for the most common beekeeping diseases like Varroa and other pests.
  • Harvest honey, pollen, and propolis using proper techniques.
  • Successfully propagate and prepare colonies for winter.

Training Notes

  • The instructor can adjust the content according to the profile of the participants.
  • Participants who attend 79% or more of the training will receive a university-approved participation certificate.
