  • No prior requirements to join this program.

Curriculum Topics

Day 1: Breed and System Selection

  • Selecting efficient local and improved breeds suitable for the region for sheep and goats,
  • Comparison of pasture, semi-intensive, and intensive farming methods,
  • Planning ideal sheep pens and goat shelters,
  • Acquisition of the flock and adaptation processes to the farm,

Day 2: Nutrition and Pasture Management

  • Feeding strategies for lambs/kids, rams/bucks, and breeding animals during pregnancy/lactation,
  • Importance of forage quality and pasture management techniques,
  • Efficient pasture utilization and timing of supplementary feeding,
  • Impact of mineral and vitamin supplements on herd health,

Day 3: Birth Management and Newborn Care

  • Planning births (heat synchronization) methods,
  • Critical care before, during, and after birth,
  • Importance of colostrum and first-week care for newborns,
  • Common lamb/kid diseases and preventive methods,

Day 4: Diseases and Herd Health

  • Common diseases in small ruminants and management methods,
  • Current and effective internal and external parasite control methods,
  • Establishing mandatory and recommended vaccination schedules for small ruminants,
  • Biosecurity measures to protect overall herd health,

Day 5: Sustainability and Marketing

  • Simple herd record systems, tagging, weighing, and herd tracking,
  • Correct techniques for shearing and hoof care,
  • Basic marketing strategies for live animals, milk, meat, and wool/mohair products,
  • Sustainable practices to increase farm profitability,

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify region-appropriate small ruminant breeds and plan shelter needs.
  • Prepare supplementary feeding plans based on pasture quality.
  • Manage reproduction and birth periods successfully.
  • Detect herd diseases early and apply regular preventive veterinary care.
  • Understand basic marketing strategies for products obtained from the herd.
  • Participants who achieve 79% or higher attendance receive a university-approved participation certificate.

Important Information

  • Attendance is mandatory. Absences exceeding 1/12 of the course will be considered as non-attendance.
  • After completion, certificates will be issued following institutional checks and delivered via PTT Cargo to the addresses provided. Address and contact details must be up-to-date.
